Aural-Based Instruction to Improve Middle School Band Sight-Reading Ability

Friday, 12/4 - 8:15–9:15am

This action research-to-practice session presents a three-year study by three middle school band teachers to assess the impact of consistent aural training instruction on students’ prioritization of rhythm and pitch while sight-reading. Findings suggest an aural approach may increase sight-reading success, but students continue to prioritize pitch over rhythm reading.

Presenters: Erik Piazza, Matt Osika, Tiffany DiPiazza
